ACP PRESS RELEASE: 20 JANUARY 2009 —The African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group has assured Fiji of its willingness to assist the Pacific state in its recovery efforts following the devastating floods, which killed 11 people and caused damages worth about 25 million euros.

Chairperson of the ACP Committee of Ambassadors and Ambassador of Burkina Faso, HE Mr Kadré Désiré Ouedraogo, last week expressed the ACP’s profound sympathy to the Government and people of Fiji through its Ambassador to Brussels, HE Mr Seremaia Cavuilati.

Mr Cavuilati briefed the ACP Bureau last week on the disaster, which severely affected his country, and expressed Fiji’s readiness to accept any form of assistance from its partners.

Mr Ouedraogo assured Mr Cavuilati of ACP’s commitment to support Fiji in its difficult time, just as it did to its members who experienced similar misfortunes in the recent past.

In a demonstration of support, ACP missions in Brussels often generously assist the affected states on voluntarily bases, donating money via bank accounts opened purposely for public assistance.

Mr Ouedraogo appeals to ACP members to show their generosity once more as one of its members suffers from natural disasters.

According to the Fiji Embassy in Brussels, the floods, the most severe since the 1960s, have claimed 11 lives, and are affecting the parts of the country that are the back-bone of the economy, as both the sugar industry and the tourism industry are located in the belts most affected by the floods.
