| ACP Committee of Ambassadors Communiqué on the normalization of the Togo-EU relationship The ACP Committee of Ambassadors and the ACP Group commend the efforts of President Faure GNASSINGBE and the Togolese Government to speed up the implementation of the 22 undertakings made within the framework of the consultations between Togo and the EU under Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement. The consultations took place in Brussels, Belgium on 14 April 2004. The ACP Committee of Ambassadors is encouraged by the continued commitment of the European Union, and has taken note of the EU Follow-Up Mission to Togo in October 2006. In that regard, the Committee of Ambassadors would like to see this active political dialogue soon lead to the normalization of relations between Togo and the EU. The Government of Togo’s programme to promote reconciliation and to reduce socio-political and institutional tension has led to a process of national reconciliation and restored confidence in the Togolese society. The ACP Group acknowledges the efforts of the Togolese Government, political actors, civil society and all the Togolese people, to intensify efforts for the consolidation of democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental liberties, the rule of law, and good governance. The ACP Committee of Ambassadors remains steadfast in its commitment to assist Togo in its efforts to normalize its relationship with the EU and intends to send, within the framework of intra-ACP political dialogue, an ACP Committee of Ambassadors’ Fact-Finding Mission to Togo during the last week of November 2006. |
