Declaration by the ACP Group on the Political Situation in Kenya

The African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP Group),

Having Regard to the Kenyan Presidential and Legislative Elections held on 27 December 2007;

Aware of the dispute over the elections results between the Party of National Unity, and the opposition Orange Democratic Movement;

Regrets the loss of life and condemns the acts of lawlessness that have caused damage to private and public property and led to the displacement of thousands of people from their homes as a result of the violence that followed the dispute over the elections results;

Expresses support for the efforts of Mr. Kofi Annan and African Eminent Statesmen to facilitate dialogue between political leaders in the search for a lasting solution to the current political situation in Kenya;

Reiterates the ACP Group’s solidarity with, and support for the people of Kenya, as well as the Group’s attachment to the promotion of democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights;

Urges the Government of Kenya and the Orange Democratic Movement to find a peaceful end to the violence and to restore peace and stability; and

Appeals to the international community, including the European Union, to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to populations that have been affected by violence.
