PORT MORESBY
NOVEMEBER 27, 2008
The European Union has assured African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group that it is strongly committed to strengthening malaria control and encouraged by the significant progress demonstrated in Zambia, Rwanda and Ethiopia.
The assurance was made in response to a question from European Parliamentarian Marie-Arlette Carlotti during question time at the 16th Session of the Joint ACP-EU Parliamentarian in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea with EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel.
Mr Michel addressed the ACP-EU Assembly before taking questions from the Parliamentarians on various issues affecting ACP States.
The Commission said that despite the improvement in fighting malaria in some countries, there is no time for complacency.
There is significant reduction of malaria in Zambia, Rwanda and Ethiopia through expanded coverage with long lasting insecticidal nets and the introduction of artemisnin-based combination therapies.
The EU Commission said it is working with member states to mobilize fundings and develop effective ways to support partner countries through the European Programme for action to confront HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis through external action.
