Appeal from the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group in favour of the RDC

The Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States, deeply touched by the disastrous situation raging in the Kivu which has been stricken by volcanic eruptions at Nyirangogo,  hereby urgently appeals to the international community to provide substantial assistance to the distressed populations.

Mr Goulongana feels the considerable loss of human life recorded is not only due to the natural disaster per se, but equally due to the state of wreck and poverty the country has been living in.

In a message addressed to the President of the DRC, the Secretary-General stressed that the tragedy afflicting Congo had occurred at a time when Mr Kabila’s efforts towards returning the country  to normal had begun to yield dividends. He hoped the rays of hope  on the horizon would not be dimmed and that the zeal of solidarity being demonstrated at this moment would be asserted with higher determination.

The ACP Secretary-General also calls on the international community to take a resolute action to resolve the Congolese crisis as soon as possible and to implement a Plan for the rehabilitation and development of Congo, on whose future largely depends the stability of the African continent.
